- Each ZIP code is matched to one predominant electric utility. Many ZIP codes are served by several utilities, so the result is a best guess, not a bill lookup.
- The balancing authority is the one EIA-861 lists for that utility in that state, chosen by largest retail sales when there are several.
- The eGRID subregion is an EPA reporting area used for emissions rates. It is not the same as a balancing authority, and it is shown for reference only.
Methodology and caveats
- ZIP to utility. From the EPA Power Profiler crosswalk (eGRID2023), which lists a predominant utility for each ZIP code. ZIP codes are mail routes, not territories, so some are served by several utilities and some cross state or grid boundaries.
- Utility to balancing authority. From the BA code that each utility reports in EIA Form EIA-861 for 2024. A utility that reports more than one balancing authority in a state is assigned the one with the most retail sales. A balancing authority code with no page here is shown as a code only.
- eGRID subregions are not balancing authorities. They are EPA areas built for emissions reporting and their borders do not follow balancing authority borders, so this tool never links a subregion to a grid page.
- Not a forecast or a bill. Your actual utility is on your electricity bill. The tool shows no live figures; open the linked grid page for those.
- Privacy. The lookup runs in your browser from a small static file for the first two digits of the ZIP code.
- Data layer. Reference data from EPA and EIA only. It is not combined with Ember statistics.
