Day-ahead wholesale prices from ENTSO-E in EUR/MWh, averaged over every hour of each calendar year, for 46 bidding zones from 1 January 2015. A zone's year appears only with at least 300 priced days. 2026 is not complete, so it is left out of the yearly figures.

The 2025 average is taken over every hour of the zone's priced days in the calendar year. The change is the 2025 average minus the 2024 average, and the percentage is that change over the 2024 average. The peak year is the calendar year with the highest average, shown for zones with at least 5 yearly figures (6 zones have fewer and show n/a). The latest 12 months column covers the 365 days to 22 October 2026, so it includes part of 2026. The median of the 45 zone averages for 2025 was EUR 98.90/MWh.

Each cell is the zone's average over every hour of its priced days in that calendar year. Averages are not adjusted for inflation. The median row is the middle value among the zones that have a figure for the year, and the set of zones grows over time, so it is not a like for like series. Germany, Austria and Luxembourg (until 2018) is in the year by year table (2015 to 2018) but not in the ranking, the peak count or the chart, because it has no price for the latest year.

Coverage and Caveats

  • Coverage: 46 bidding zones, 154,707 zone days of yearly figures, from 1 January 2015 to 22 October 2026 (the newest delivery day published). The years shown are 2015 to 2025; 2026 is not complete.
  • These are day-ahead wholesale prices, set by an auction the day before delivery. They are not what a household pays: bills add network charges, taxes, levies and supplier margins. For what households and businesses are billed, see retail electricity prices.
  • A zone's year is shown only if it has at least 300 priced days. Zones joined the data at different dates, so earlier years have fewer zones. Days are whole local days on the zone's own clock; a clock change day has 23 or 25 hours and is weighted by its length.
  • Prices are in EUR as published and are not converted or adjusted for inflation. A zone's earlier prices in another currency (Bulgaria, Poland and Romania before they were published in euros) are left out, so those zones start in their first euro year.
  • The German-Luxembourg zone and the earlier German-Austrian-Luxembourg zone are different bidding zones; they are not joined into one series. Zones that stopped publishing keep their own earlier years.
  • The data shows what prices were, not why they moved. The average of a year hides large swings inside it: see the cheapest hours of the day and negative prices.

Electricity Prices by Year: Questions and Answers

What was the average electricity price in Europe last year?

Across 45 bidding zones, the day-ahead wholesale price averaged between EUR 8.7/MWh (Norway North (NO4)) and EUR 118.5/MWh (Kosovo) in 2025. The median zone was EUR 98.9/MWh. These are day-ahead market prices before network charges, taxes and supplier margins.

Which year had the highest electricity prices?

The highest yearly average was in 2022 for 37 of 39 zones with at least 5 years of figures. The median of the zone yearly averages was highest in 2022, at EUR 241.9/MWh. The data shows the size and timing of the change; it does not by itself explain what caused it.

Is the day-ahead price what I pay for electricity?

No. The day-ahead price is the wholesale price set by an auction the day before delivery. A household bill adds network charges, taxes, levies and a supplier margin, and many tariffs are fixed for months or years.

How is a yearly average calculated?

For each bidding zone, the average is taken over every hour of the zone's priced days in the calendar year, with days counted by their hours on the zone's own clock (a clock change day has 23 or 25 hours). A year is shown only if the zone has at least 300 priced days in it. Prices are in euros per megawatt hour as published and are not adjusted for inflation.

Why do some prices go below zero?

The day-ahead market allows negative prices, which occur when supply exceeds demand in an hour. In 2025, Sweden North-Central (SE2) had the highest share of hours below zero among the zones here, 7.7% of its hours.

Why are some zones missing from the ranking?

Germany, Austria and Luxembourg (until 2018) stopped publishing a separate day-ahead price before the latest data, so it appears in the year by year table but not in the 2025 ranking. Bidding zones are redrawn from time to time.
