In 2025 the world generated 31,920 TWh of electricity, up 3.4% on 2024. 42.3% came from low carbon sources and 57.7% from fossil fuels, and the power sector emitted 14,686 MtCO2. These are Ember's annual statistics for 215 countries; World Power Monitor adds live operator data for grid zones where a public feed allows it.

The world generated 31,920 TWh of electricity in 2025, up 3.4% on 2024.
Low carbon sources (nuclear and renewables) supplied 42.3% of world electricity in 2025, and fossil fuels 57.7%.
Coal was the largest single source of world electricity in 2025, at 33.2%.
Solar and wind together produced 17.3% of world electricity in 2025, up from 4.5% in 2015.
Power sector emissions were 14,686 MtCO2 in 2025, up 0.8% on 2024.
The carbon intensity of world electricity was 460 gCO2/kWh in 2025, down 2.5% on 2024.
Installed solar capacity passed coal capacity worldwide in 2025; in 2025 it was 2,391 GW against 2,242 GW of coal.

World electricity generation by source from 2000 to 2025, stacked, in TWh. The total grew from 15,279 TWh in 2000 to 31,920 TWh. In 2025 the largest sources were coal (33.2%), gas (21.7%) and hydro (13.9%). Solar generation went from 1.02 TWh in 2000 to 2,807 TWh.
